Evanna Lynch of Harry Potter: "Eating Animals Is a Betrayal of Our Own Core Humanity" [Video]
Evanna Lynch, best known for her role as Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter, had a lot to say about veganism and animal rights during her talk and acceptance speech for her Burke Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Discourse Through the Arts by the College Historical Society at Trinity College.
After becoming a vegan, Lynch had stated in an interview that she believed the character she played in the popular film series wouldn’t consume animals, stating:
“I just think she’s someone who’s such a compassionate person, and she absolutely doesn’t want to hurt anyone. She just wants to let living things breathe and be themselves, and that is the essence of Luna.”
Now, during her talk in Dublin, the actress went more in-depth about her choice, and while she mentioned the negative environmental effects of animal agriculture, such has greenhouse gas emissions, loss of resources, and deforestation, she made it clear that her choice had more to do with animal suffering than anything else. She stated:
“Killing and eating animals is a betrayal of our own core humanity…killing an innocent goes against our nature.”
The crowd was open and receptive to the message, and asked her questions about her choice and recommendations for recipes. She closed her talk reminding the audience that veganism is “not about restriction”, but rather “compassion for all creatures-including the self”. You can watch the full video below:
