Move over almond milk, there’s a new player in town! Ripple Foods, a San Francisco-based startup, have announced that their pea-based vegan milks will hit shelves this month at Whole Foods, and by July they will be featured in Target locations as well!
The line of Ripple milks, which include original, original unsweetened, vanilla, and chocolate, are created to be “high in protein, low in sugar and delicious” and essentially isolate pea protein from other components in order to attain a neutral-taste. The website states that the original unsweetened option has 8g of protein per serving, no sugar, 50% more calcium than milk, 32mg of omega-3s, as well as vitamin D and iron, with all the milks having half the sugar of regular milk. And according to co-founder Neil Renninger, the taste is also equally impressive:
“We find that people that are dairy milk drinkers really like it, and alternative-dairy drinkers love it. We’ve probably had a couple of thousand people try it, and the reception has been very good.”
The resulting milk is vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and soy and nut-free, and the bottles are made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic that is 100% recyclable. According to Ripple Foods, for food to be good it must “taste great, nourish your body, and leave a small footprint on the planet”.
If pea-based milk is to become the “new almond milk”, we can rest assured knowing that the milks are just the first of many products we can expect to see from Ripple Foods, as the company is also set to launch pea-based yogurts, cheeses, creamers, and protein shakes and powders.
