Alan Cumming & PETA Request Dairy-Free Options at Dairy Queen
Famous actor and author Alan Cumming also holds a special place in many people’s hearts due to his activism and vegan lifestyle. His latest collaboration is with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), in order to encourage massive ice cream chain Dairy Queen to introduce some dairy-free options to their menu.
Ice cream and frozen yogurt chains and companies such as Menchie’s, Ben & Jerry’s and 16 Handles have all included some vegan options for their customers, and Cumming and PETA believe National Ice Cream Month is the perfect time for Dairy Queen to follow suit. In his letter directed towards John P. Gainor Jr., president and CEO of Dairy Queen, Cumming writes:
“I’m writing today on behalf of my friends at PETA to ask that Dairy Queen join other leading companies by introducing vegan ice creams. Given the increased global demand from people who suffer from dairy allergies and lactose intolerance as well as those concerned about their health, the environment, and animal welfare, it’s no surprise that the dairy alternatives market is expected to reach $19.5 billion in value by 2020.”
He continued by stating that Dairy Queen now “has the opportunity to broaden its appeal by offering healthier, “greener,” animal-friendly vegan treats.” Cumming finished off his letter by stating that including dairy-free alternatives has only resulted in more sales for companies that have done so, and therefore the situation is a clear win for Dairy Queen.
Earlier this summer, Cumming famously wore a shirt that read “Not a Dairy Queen“. If the ice cream chain makes the decision to include some vegan options, we might see him wearing a very different t-shirt logo!
