Oprah Gets on Board with Meatless Mondays!
Last Sunday, the Meatless Monday campaign received an endorsement from one of the most powerful women in America. Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s “Super Soul Sunday” show to discuss his new book, The Humane Economy.
During their discussion, Oprah asked what small tasks each of us can do to impact the lives of animals in a positive way. Wayne’s answer was, of course, to experiment with taking meat off your plate just one day a week with the support of the Meatless Monday campaign. To his surprise, Oprah took the pledge!
That night the following tweet appeared on her Twitter account:
“[email protected] That I can do. Have ‘Meatless’ Mondays! Who will join me? #SuperSoulSunday”
Her decision should actually come with little surprise, as the talk show host was sued by the beef industry 20 years ago after saying her epiphany from interviewing vegan activist, and former cattle rancher, Howard Lyman “stopped me cold from eating another hamburger!” She went on to win the case and today joins a larger movement to reduce the amount of animal flesh on our plates.
