El Palote Panaderia Has Transformed Its Menu to Be 100% Vegan!
According to Dallas News, El Palote Panaderia, a Mexican restaurant and bakery, has transformed its menu-which used to include vegan options-to be 100% plant-based a few months shy of its one-year anniversary!
The article states that the couple behind the restaurant, Lily and Aurelio Arias, began “creating hundreds of recipes using substitutes like soy for meat-like texture” and eventually made them the “centerpiece of their restaurant.” The shift towards veganism grew out of a health scare when Aurelio’s high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels almost caused him to die of a heart attack. After reading a chapter from a book on the “harmful effects of an animal-product-based diet,” he immediately decided “to not eat animal products.”
Lily then made the decision to become “vegan out of love for him.” Already selling vegan and non-vegan Mexican food out of their home, their son Aurelio Jr. eventually suggested that the couple open a restaurant. While the 100% vegan transformation may have surprised many of the restaurant’s loyal patrons, Lily tells them:
“We love you as clients, but we want to take care of you…And that [non-vegan] food is not good for your health.”
Some of the many options on El Palote’s menu includes tacos, tortas, flautas, enchiladas, tamales, fajitas, and barbecue sandwiches, and many of the dishes include “6 different styles of soy” and come with rice and beans. Customers can also choose the gluten-free options of tacos and flautas. According to a recent post on the restaurant’s Facebook page, “everything is 100% traditional Mexican, being vegan does not change the tradition!”
El Palote is located at 2537 S. Buckner Blvd., in Dallas, Texas, and is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page!
