Vegan Pie Scene Highlight of A Ghost Story
A Ghost Story, starring vegan celebrities Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, includes a notorious 9-minute long scene featuring a vegan chocolate pie that writer and director David Lowery has stated is the scene he is “proudest of.”
In the film, Mara plays M, a grieving widow haunted by her deceased husband. According to USA Today, M “mourns his death by woefully wolfing down almost an entire pie in one uninterrupted nine-minute scene.” Lowery stated:
“I wanted a representation of grief that we haven’t seen before … that felt unique and uncomfortable and profound. I thought about how sometimes when I’m upset, I just eat a lot. I thought that would be a really powerful image.”
The pie in question was from vegan restaurant Spiral Diner & Bakery in Texas, with Lowery telling IndieWire:
“It was a chocolate pudding pie. Vegan. Very low sugar content. I believe the crust was gluten-free. Rooney told me beforehand that she had never had pie in her life, so it was a first in many regards. I think she enjoyed it.”
Unfortunately, Mara’s first pie was not a hit with her taste buds, but Lowery stated: “It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done.”
