Leonardo DiCaprio Joins Beef Ban Movement
Leonardo DiCaprio is not only famous for his movies, but also for his activism-primarily focused on advocating to put an end to climate change. The star of The Revenant is also the executive producer of Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret, and in March the actor donated $1 million to Seychelles for marine conservation.
Now, DiCaprio, who has also been rumored to be a vegan, is teaming up to advocate for a beef ban. He joins Indian Hindu group Rashtriya Swayamsevvak Sangh (RSS), which is a non-governmental organization rallying for a beef ban, motivated by religious reasons.
DiCaprio, along with Virgin Airlines founder and vegan Sir Richard Branson and British Broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, have joined the movement, motivated by environmental concerns and to shed light on the impacts of animal agriculture, which is estimated to account for 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions.
DiCaprio and other supporters will join RSS on July 31 in the United Kingdom to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organizations’s international wing, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh. The event will be hosted by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Joint General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale.
While the actor’s motivations for a beef ban may differ from that of the organization, it could help with the end goal as it will combine religious, environmental and ethical considerations in order to encourage people to stop or lessen their consumption of beef.
